Why Clinical Nutrition Should be Part of Your Care Team

Nutrition is an integral part of wellness at all stages of life. At Magee, good nutrition is essential on the road to recovery and is curative in healing and restoring minds and bodies. Diet is closely monitored by our team of Registered Dietitians (RD) and Dietetic Technicians. An RD is a food and nutrition expert who provides our patients with information, tools, and support during their acute rehabilitative stay. The RD is responsible for collecting and documenting information specific to a patient’s nutritional care, such as their diet history, anthropometric measurements (i.e. height, weight, body mass index), laboratory data, medical tests and procedures, and all nutrition-focused physical findings.

Collaboratively, the RD works with other members of the interdisciplinary care team in monitoring and evaluating food and drug interactions, nutrient panels, chewing and swallowing, and gastrointestinal function. The roles of an RD include providing medical nutrition therapy, performing physical assessments and leaving recommendations and interventions to meet the estimated dietary and fluid needs of their patients. On the floor, the RD assesses and counsels patients and is available to provide nutrition education specific to a patient’s needs and disease state. Behind the scenes, the RD revises diet orders and adjusts and monitors nutrition support, supplementation and caloric intake and outcomes. Food is the medicine an RD prescribes as our patients continue to grow, develop, and thrive.
