Visit Rec Fest This Weekend

The Global Abilities Foundation (GAF) hosts the 5th annual Philadelphia Rec Fest this Saturday, September 19 at the Carousel House in Fairmount Park. This event showcases recreational activities for all ages and abilities. The Rec Fest is a one-stop shop for people with disabilities to get exposed to a multitude of different activities. They demonstrate numerous adapted sports for adults and children with physical and/or developmental disabilities, like scuba diving, rock climbing, wheelchair basketball, martial arts, and dancing. Global Abilities will also feature fun carnival games for children and their families. All guests are encouraged to try out the different activities and receive information about how to get involved with various programs. In addition to the demonstrations, there will be tables with resources for recreation, legal services, travel, employment, and other services.  And best of all, it’s FREE!

One in five Americans is living with a disability.  In the Philadelphia region alone, several hundred thousand individuals have a physical disability, developmental disability, or sensory (hearing or sight) impairment.  In addition to physical challenges, many persons with disabilities also have secondary complications such as social isolation, low self-esteem, and depression.  Recreation is an important element of the physical and mental well-being of all of us, but people with disabilities do not have the same access to recreation as do their able-bodied counterparts. It’s important that we get ourselves out and attend events like these. Not only do you see what’s available to you but, in most cases, you can try it out for yourself!
