Two Local Amusement Parks Top Most Accessible List

Amusement parks: are they fun for the whole family if someone in your group has a disability? The answer is yes, and as a matter of fact, we have two of the most accessible amusement parks in the country right nearby.  Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ and Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA are both known nationally for their inclusion efforts. If you’re looking to squeeze in one last day of summer fun before school starts, here are some of the modifications they have made to ensure everyone has a safe and fun experience.

Equal access pass program:  This allows you to sign up for a ride without waiting in line. People with disabilities still have to wait the estimated time for the ride but can do so while enjoying other areas of the park. For example, if you signed up for a ride at 2 p.m. and there was a 40 minute wait, you would be allowed come back to the ride at 2:40 p.m. and board the ride right away. Additionally, people with disabilities are allowed to bring three people with them on each ride they choose to go on.

Alternate access:  Due to steps and other geographical barriers, separate entrances to the rides are designed when needed to ensure access.

Service Dog Swap: Although service dogs are allowed in the park, they are not allowed on most, or all rides depending on the park you attend.  Because of this, someone in the group must stay with the dog while the rest of the group enjoys the ride.  Both Six Flags Great Adventure and Sesame Place allow the person waiting with the dog to enjoy the ride right after the group returns, without waiting in line a second time.  There are also special relief areas for your dog throughout each park, but it is your responsibility to clean up the mess.

Accessibility Guides:  Both parks offer an accessibility guide in both a paper and electronic format, (links listed below.)  The guide explains all of the modifications and adaptations for the park, as well as requirements and accessibility for each ride.  Before choosing to attend a park be sure to look over this document to confirm that that park fits your specific needs.
