PT Month Spotlight: Meet Melanie Dieterick!

Can you tell us a little bit more about your background?  I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Arcadia University.I came to Magee after I graduated in 2007 and transitioned to Magee Riverfront Outpatient in 2008 where I participated in the Locomotor Training Clinic. I’ve been a part of the Locomotor Training Clinic and NeuroRecovery Network ever since.

Why did you decide to become a physical therapist?   I knew I wanted to work in the healthcare field helping people. Volunteering at local PT clinics during high school solidified the idea that it would be a job I would enjoy. I also liked the idea that I wouldn’t be sitting behind a desk all day.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?   Helping my patients get back to doing the things they enjoy the most. It’s wonderful getting to know my patients and their families and making long lasting friendships.

Can you tell us about an experience that solidified for you that you made the right career choice?   I’ve had many memorable experiences particularly in the Locomotor Training Program. I know I’ve made the right choice when I see my patient’s face after they have just completed a task they couldn’t do before as it gets them one step closer to their independence.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?   I love simplifying life by getting out into nature to hike, kayak, or backpack with my fiancé. Recently, I’ve enjoyed antiquing to furnish our new home.
