PT Month Spotlight: Jeff Trexler

In honor of National Physical Therapy month, we are highlighting some of Magee’s Physical Therapy team throughout the month of October. Today’s spotlight is on Jeff Trexler, a PT working on Magee’s general rehab unit.

Ashley Owens: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Jeff Trexler: I’m a 1999 graduate of D’Youville College in Buffalo, New York where I received my bachelors and master’s degrees in physical therapy. I then completed my transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree at Temple while employed at Jeanes Hospital here in Philadelphia. I have worked in a variety of settings including outpatient, private practice, community hospitals, and large teaching hospitals, and of course in the rehab setting here at Magee. I’ve been at Magee for about 5 1/2 years, and I have found my professional home. The majority of my time at Magee has been spent working in the outpatient setting.

AO: What made you decide to become a PT?

JT: My decision to become a physical therapist was made early in life, around the time I was 14 years old. I was introduced to physical therapy after breaking my ankle for the second time. My therapist gave my strengthening and proprioceptive exercises to work on. That facility was where I actually ended up getting my first job! My godfather’s sister was also a physical therapist, and I got to do observation hours with her before eventually deciding on a college to attend to earn my degree. I wanted to study in a more metropolitan area than where I’m from and chose D’Youville. The rest is history!

AO: What is the most rewarding part of your job? I’m sure there are many!

JT: The rewards of being a physical therapist are multifaceted. It is rewarding to help all of my patients reach their goals, get better, resume their prior activities, and ultimately get their lives back as a result of physical therapy. Patients and their family members are putting their trust in us to help and teach them during a very difficult time. Another part of my job that I love is my interaction with all of my co-workers. I love working alongside a great team to help patients achieve their goals and make the most out of rehab. I find it an honor to work at such a reputable place as Magee, known in the community for being a top notch hospital.

AO: What are some of your passions outside of being a PT?

JT: I’ve been married for over 10 years, and I have two beautiful boys who are my focus outside of my work. I love recycling, house music, public transportation, dancing, and running (in no particular order).
