Carli Lloyd, the South Jersey native who led the United States to the World Cup championship in July, will be honored by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association at its 112th annual banquet on Monday, February 1 at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill. Adam Taliaferro, former patient and longtime friend of Magee, was honored by the PSWA in 2009, and proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will support the Adam Taliaferro Foundation. The Adam Taliaferro Foundation provides emotional, financial and educational support to student-athletes who suffer catastrophic head or spinal cord injuries in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Delaware. The Foundation also provides funding for research, prevention and care of such injuries.
“Being honored by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association is humbling and a very special moment for me,” Lloyd said. “I am very proud of my roots, and having grown up in the South Jersey area, I became an instant fan of all the Philadelphia sports teams. I feel a connection with the PSWA as they have supported me for many years now. I am looking forward to coming back home and being a part of such a special night.”
Lloyd, who had a hat-trick in the World Cup final against Japan and scored gold-medal-winning goals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, will be available to sign autographs at the end of the banquet. Many other pro and collegiate athletes will be honored including Philadelphia Flyer Jake Voracek and boxer Larry Holmes.
