OT Spotlight: Bob Ferri

In honor of National Occupational Therapy Month, we’ll be highlighting a new OT every week throughout April. Today’s spotlight is on Bob Ferri, an OT at our Riverfront Outpatient Center.

Robert Ferri, OTR/L, MS, CHT

Tell us a little about your background.

I’m a graduate of Temple University, and received my CHT (Certified Hand Therapist) credentials at Drexel. I have been an occupational therapist for 21 years, all of them at Magee.

Bob FerriWhy did you decide to become an OT?

I think people are healthy/healed when they are able to get back to doing things they need or enjoy doing, and can focus on what they are doing rather than focus on the disability. I have a tremendous love of the human body and am amazed by its complexity everyday.  I love trying to help bring the body back to its potential to perform again first, but also love the creativity of adapting something so one can succeed at what they love even if it means doing it differently.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love the creativity of working as an OT, and am in awe of what how our bodies can sometimes come back.

Tell us about an experience that solidified for you that you made the right career choice.

I have worked with far too many patients in my 21 years as an OT to pick one that crystallized my love of the profession., but  every time I see an authentic smile on a face when someone did something they did not think they could do, I know it was the right choice.

What are some of your passions outside of OT?

Outside of work , I like planning and completing woodworking projects, some gardening and sitting on the porch with a good, cold glass of whatever you imagine.
