Introducing Magee’s MS Healthy Living Program

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, which results in the loss of muscle control, vision, balance, and sensation.  The condition is an autoimmune disease since the nerves of the brain and spinal cord are damaged by one’s own immune system. Each individual living with MS experiences different struggles and triumphs. Common issues among those with MS include fatigue, heat intolerance, bladder issues, and getting enough exercise. Magee was recently awarded a grant from the National MS Society for wellness promotion in those individuals who are living with MS and who aspire to a healthier lifestyle.

Thanks to that grant, we are very excited to introduce Magee’s MS Healthy Living Program! The MS Healthy Living Program is a weekly program that is held at Magee’s Outpatient Riverfront location. Magee’s newest wellness program aims to assist those living with MS by providing structured education and cognitive activities on topics of group interest. In addition, exercise classes focus on cardiovascular health, resistance training, stretching, and core strengthening. These exercise sessions also incorporate varied activities such as yoga, Zumba, dance movement therapy, and circuit training.  The program is also a great opportunity to build a support network among other people living with MS. Socialization and stress reduction is enhanced through the use of art and horticultural therapy, with each of these activities being held on a monthly basis. The program is held every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

If you or someone you know is living with MS, we welcome you to come and join us for this exciting new program!  If you wish to register for the program, or if you have any questions, please contact the director of the program, Mary Clare Schafer RN, MS, ONC, CRRN at (215) 218-3905.
