5 Healthy Tips for Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Whether you’re toasting the holiday at your favorite Mexican restaurant or celebrating at home, follow these five tips for keeping your health in mind while you party.

5 Healthy Tips for Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

  1. Ditch the chips or determine your limit before you arrive. Consuming chips can add up fast. If you have a snack before you go out, you will be less likely to inhale a basket of them when you sit down for your fiesta.
  2. Instead of refried beans, ask for whole or pinto beans for a healthier option.
  3. Choose corn tortillas instead of flour or hard tacos. The soft shells haven’t been deep fried like the hard shell tacos, which can help shave off some calories.
  4. Rethink your toppings. Try to avoid sour cream and limit cheese. Opt for guac! Why? Although it is high in fat, it’s the “good” fat we look for in our diets and is also rich in fiber and Vitamin E. We’ve included a great guacamole recipe below.
  5. If you choose to drink alcohol, try a skinny margarita. Not on the menu? Ask your server if it’s possible to have your margarita made with clear tequila, fresh lime juice, and a splash of club soda, instead of a pre-made margarita mix which can be high in calories. If it’s too tart for your liking, add your own dash of sugar, and you’ll still be ahead of the game.
