Magee Rehabilitation is committed to providing the best physical, emotional, and spiritual care to our patients and their loved ones. In the course of treatment, you and your family might be asked to make difficult decisions about your medical care, choices that involve your personal values and beliefs. Sometimes there are disagreements over treatment and confusion about how decisions should be made. Magee’s Ethics Service is here to help patients, families and staff resolve these conflicts in a way that respects your values and beliefs.
The Ethics Service is a group of caring people dedicated to supporting patients, families and staff as they make decisions that are in line with their beliefs and values. Ethics committee members may include social workers, psychologists, nurses, clergy, therapists, physicians and other healthcare providers. All members have a background in ethics and are experienced in supporting families going through difficult situations. - What should I do if my healthcare team and I disagree about a discharge plan?

Who can I go to for help if I am facing a difficult decision?
The first person to speak with is your doctor – he or she is familiar with your medical situation and can often help to clear up areas of confusion. Every patient at Magee has access to a Case Manager and a psychologist who may also help. It may also be helpful to contact the Ethics Consultation service.
Who may ask to meet with the Ethics Service?
Any patient, family member, friend, or staff person can request a meeting with the Ethics Service.

What happens after I ask for a meeting with the Ethics Service?
A member of the Ethics Service will meet with you to listen to your concerns and gather information. Sometimes a short conversation is enough to sort out any questions or worries you have. In many cases, the ethics consultant will also speak with members of the healthcare team involved in your or your family memberגs care. Sometimes a meeting will be called with the patient, family, and healthcare team to share concerns and explore treatment options. In the end, it is up to you, your family, and your healthcare team to make decisions about your care. The Ethics Service is there to support you and your family through the process.
As with all healthcare information, the things you talk about with the ethics service will be kept confidential. Only you and your healthcare team will know what was talked about. The Ethics Service will be available for follow-up or further support as needed.
