A concussion is a mild form of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. Concussions can also occur from a fall or blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS of CONCUSSION

  • Headache or “pressure” in head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Balance problems or dizziness
  • Double or blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy
  • Concentration or memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Change in sleep pattern
  • Does not “feel right”
  • Appears dazed or stunned
  • Forgets instructions
  • Movements are clumsy
  • Answers questions slowly
  • Loses consciousness (even briefly)
  • Shows behavior or personality changes (irritability, sadness, anxiety)
  • Can’t recall events prior to or after incident

The Magee Rehabilitation Concussion Center utilizes ImPACT™ (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), the most widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system, and other testing devices to access and treat individuals with a concussion.

Given the inherent difficulties in concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and post-injury neuro-cognitive testing. In addition, physical and psychological sequelea of concussion are evaluated, specific to each individual. Magee offers a comprehensive range of services to address post-injury concerns and to help individuals with unresolved concussion symptoms return to their prior level of functioning.

These include:

  • Evaluation by Magee Rehabilitation physiatrist and/or neuropsychologist
  • Quick and timely appointment availability with free parking
  • Baseline, neuro-cognitive assessments using ImPACT™
  • Comprehensive post- injury physical, psychological, and neuro-cognitive assessment, including ImPACT™ test
  • As appropriate, follow-up with neuropsychologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, physical, occupational, and speech therapists and vestibular specialists
  • Interface with employers or schools regarding accommodations needed during recovery and recommendations regarding safe return to work, school or play
  • Collaboration with referring physician or case manager
  • Vestibular Therapy, balance screening and treatment using Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP)
  • Referrals to vision assessment resource
  • Use of the Dynavision2, a training tool that addresses multiple aspects of the visual motor system
  • Adolescent/Young adult services to help academic or vocational re-entry
  • Rehab nursing services to assist with medications and case coordination
  • Relaxation strategies
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Ergonomic assessments
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Functional Capacity Evaluation

Program Co-Directors

Brian T. Kucer, MD

Brian Kucer, MD is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) with a subspeciality certification in brain injury medicine and is the Medical Director of the Brain Injury Program at Magee Rehabilitation. Dr. Kucer’s approach to treatment is to evaluate the effect of a concussion on the whole person, to educate patients on the natural recovery process, to intervene when necessary to reduce symptoms, and to get people back to enjoying life again.

Todd M. Lewis, PhD

Todd Lewis, PhD joined Magee in 1994 as a clinical neuropsychologist on the Magee neurorehabilitation team. Dr. Lewis’ specialty is working with cognitive-behavioral changes which occur following traumatic brain injury.
