For former Magee Rehabilitation Hospital patient, Janet Margolies, occupational therapy was a lifeline. After a fall left her with a smashed femur and broken wrist in 2008, she came to Magee to receive occupational therapy - preparing for the activities of her daily life, which included everything from being able to work to preparing her own meals.

And Margolies decided to give back.

In honor of April, which is Occupational Therapy Month, Margolies partnered with Magee's Occupational Therapists and held a month long "Kitchen Shower" to re-supply the three kitchens where patients are taught new ways to cook, bake, and regain their independence.

Occupational Therapists and hospital staff were encouraged to purchase kitchen items listed on registries at Target, and Bed, Bath&Beyond websites. Throughout the month, sets of pots and pans, coffee makers, mixers, silverware, and countless other gadgets arrived at the hospital. Margolies herself wrote over 450 letters to family, friends and colleagues asking for donations. So far, over $5,600 has been sent to help the cause.

To celebrate the success of the "kitchen shower" and to cap off Occupational Therapy Month, Magee is hosting a dessert reception at noon on Thursday, April 24 on the 5th Floor gym. Staff attending the reception will bring small kitchen items to be used in therapy sessions. (Media are invited to attend the event)
