PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 4, 2012--Philadelphia attorney and longtime supporter of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Jerry Segal will receive the Philadelphia Sports Congress' Robert P. Levy Community Service Award on Tuesday, June 5 at the Wanamaker Athletic Awards Ceremony.
The Robert P. Levy Community Service Award is presented to the individual, business or organization that has done the most to contribute to the quality of life in Philadelphia through sports. Segal was selected for this award for his dedication to the support of Magee through his annual Jerry Segal Classic golf event. Over the past 22 years, this annual event has raised $10 million for patients and their families. Whether helping a patient purchase a wheelchair, providing funds to help patients as they return to their family, friends and jobs, or funding community initiatives such as Magee's peer support programs, the Jerry Segal Classic has touched the lives of thousands of individuals.
Segal's dedication to Magee began in 1988 after a surgical accident left him with tetrapalegia. He was transferred to Magee where he was determined to rehabilitate and walk out of the hospital--and three months later, he did. Since leaving Magee, Segal has dedicated himself to raising money to help individuals with spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries and other impairments reach their maximum level of independence.
"It's a labor of love," says Segal, who will host the 23rd Annual Jerry Segal Classic on September 21 at the ACE Club and Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania. "I have no conscience when it comes to Magee and improving the lives of the patients who are now in similar conditions to me. There isn't anyone I won't ask to support this cause."
