Swim Your Way to a Safe Summer

Since the full warmth of summer weather is upon us, the best way to beat the heat is to take a nice swim in the ocean or a dip in the pool. With these fun summer activities come risks, so here are a few tips on water safety!

  • When it comes to water safety, first ask yourself: what is in the water?  Lakes, rivers and oceans are fun natural resources, but before you jump right in, be sure you can see the bottom.  In many cases, the bottom of natural bodies of water may be filled with rocks and or other debris that may not be visible.  It is best to remember to go feet first before jumping, by walking into the body of water to check its depth and what might be at the bottom.
  • Try to only swim when a lifeguard is on duty. However, if that is unrealistic, it is important that you never swim alone and always have a buddy. It is very easy to get hurt while swimming, and the buddy system minimizes the risk of any accidents becoming serious.
  • When swimming in the ocean, be mindful of rip currents. If you ever get caught in a current, swim parallel to the shore line, not directly out. Struggling against the current is futile, and will only tire you quicker.  If at any point you feel in distress, face the shoreline, wave your arms, and yell for help.
  • Diving is a high risk activity, and should be done only under certain conditions: in a pool specifically designed for diving and without swimmers in the diving area. When entering the ocean, do not dive directly into the waves as its force may drive you headfirst into the hard-packed sand.

I hope these tips keep everyone “swimmingly” safe; enjoy your summer!
