SCI Awareness Month: Walk It Out 24-Hour Step-A-Thon

September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. All month long, we’ll be highlighting events, patient stories, and new technologies related to SCI.

Did you know that there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis throughout the world? That equals almost 6 million people worldwide! For the third year in a row, Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will invite former and current patients, friends, and family members to participate in its annual “Walk It Out” Step-A-Thon challenge. This 24-hour event will raise money to benefit those living with paralysis or other disabilities.

The goal is to keep at least one treadmill running for 24 hours straight from 5 P.M. on Friday October 23 to 5 P.M. on Saturday October 24. All donations raised will go towards the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation’s NeuroRecovery Network and Magee’s Locomotor Training Clinic to continue progressing treatment and research for people with spinal cord injuries. Other hospital sites in the NeuroRecovery Network will also be joining in on the fun, as the “Walk to Victory over Paralysis” will take place at NeuroRecovery sites across the country that same weekend.

Over the last couple of years, the Walk It Out event has been a huge success with the help and support of Magee patients, staff, friends and family. In 2014, Magee had over 40 former patients participate and was able to raise over $40,000!

Want to volunteer? Ways you can help out include:

  • Assisting patients on the LT treadmill (trained staff only)
  • Offering support to participants by providing towels, cheering, etc.
  • Selling auction tickets
  • Helping to prepare and serve food/drinks
  • Pledging to walk a certain amount of time on a standard treadmill on your own or as a buddy

If you are interested in participating, please call (215) 218-3913 or email Erin O’Donnell or Eric Beck.

If you are unable to participate but would still like to donate, please visit our donation page where you can register yourself as a participant, make a general donation, or select a participant from the list to sponsor.

We hope to see you there!
