PT Month Spotlight: Meet Andrew Stamatelos!

Can you tell us a little bit more about your background?  I grew up in South Jersey as the oldest of 5 boys;  one of which is my twin.   I graduated high school in 2003, then went to DeSales University where I played lacrosse and got a degree in exercise science.  After working for a year, I went back to get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Drexel University.

Why did you decide to become a Physical Therapist?  I always wanted to do something in the health professions.  I went to college anticipating continuing on to become an athletic trainer.   While working with athletic trainers,  I found myself gravitating more towards the rehab of the athletes after injury.  Because of that, I sought out multiple internships in physical therapy during my last two years of college. Still unsure of what I wanted to do after I finished my undergraduate degree, I took a job in the Locomotor Training Clinic at Magee Riverfront… and the rest as they say… is history.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?   Every time I work with a patient and have a family member say, “I didn’t think I would ever see them do that again.”   Whatever the “that” may be, it is rewarding.

Can you tell us about an experience that solidified for you that you had made the right career choice?   Being happy to go to work on a daily basis (well almost, I’m only human after all).  Unfortunately, I think that kind of happiness with work is pretty rare.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of work?  I am pretty much into anything outdoors;   running, hiking, camping (preferably without cell service).  I am an avid snowboarder, and I try to make it out west at least once a year.  I try to play some pick up lacrosse games and coach the youth a little when I am able to.   I also love to golf and am a self-proclaimed beer snob.  My brother Jon-Erik and I brew 3-5 beers a month and have recently been getting pretty independent and creative with the recipes.  Most actually turn out really good!  I am World War II history nerd and thoroughly enjoy reading about and watching every documentary I can find.  I enjoy traveling to new cities and exploring them for a weekend as well.  I’m sure there is more I could tell you, but this will have to do.  Thanks for reading!

And thanks to YOU Andrew!  So glad to have you on Team Magee!
