Congratulations to Joe Patterson, RN on receiving the DAISY Award! Joe serves Magee’s outpatient population in the Gaspar Center and was honored with a cake and surprise award presentation this Tuesday during National Nurses Week.
The wife of the first head-injured person ever treated at Magee wrote a nomination for Joe. She described him as real deal and the family’s life line. “Joe has been my husband’s nurse for over 28 years in outpatient,” she says. “Joe cares for his patients and their loved ones, not only on our visits every four months, but helps with calls and care matters that arise in between visits.” She adds, “Quite honestly, there isn’t one dazzling Magee moment for this nomination. It is the caring support, expertise, and Joe’s being available that makes this uncharted territory for my husband. Going to outpatient appointments at Magee is like going to family with Joe Patterson, RN.”
The DAISY Foundation was formed in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 of complications from an auto-immune disease. When deciding how to honor Patrick’s memory, his family thought the one positive thing they could hold onto from the experience of his hospitalization was the amazingly skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses. They felt compelled to express their profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day, and that’s how the DAISY Award was born. Today, the DAISY Award is presented to nurses at more than 2,000 healthcare facilities in 15 countries worldwide.
