Celebrate America in DC Easily in your Wheelchair

It’s the 4th of July! And while there is plenty going on in the City of Brotherly Love, Washington, DC is a popular destination for this patriotic holiday weekend. If you’re heading down for the weekend or just planning a trip for the future, you’ll be very happy to know that DC is an incredibly accessible city. Here are my tips for making it a trip to remember… for good reasons.

Take the Metro. DC’s public transit system, the Metro, is a great option for everyone. Not only does it have stops at all the major monuments and museums, but it is also incredibly accessible. There is a great page that discusses accessibility, and it shows that all stops and cars are accessible. If you drive down to DC, all Metro stations are equipped with accessible parking, which sure beats trying to find a place to park in crowded downtown!

Take some time to stroll around the mall and enjoy the paved paths. It’s great exercise and always a great opportunity to people watch.

Visit the museums as they are open and accessible. The Spy Museum is one of my favorites. I am also a huge fan of the Smithsonian Museums, and not just because they are free! They are easy to get around, and no matter how many times you visit, there always seems to be something new to see!

The summer goes by way too fast, so make sure you take the time to get outside and enjoy it. DC is a great place for a day trip, and even if you don’t go for the holiday, the attractions are usually open every weekend. Make plans, get out there, and have fun!
