Art Heals: Nick’s Story

ART HEALS.  It’s a simple statement.  But for a participant in Magee’s Art Therapy Program, its meaning is layered and complex, a reflection of the physical and psychological journey toward recovery after a serious injury or illness.

Domenico “Nick” Lazzaro came to Magee for inpatient rehabilitation after sustaining a T8 level spinal cord injury in a military training exercise in June 2017. As a husband, father, and officer in the Army National Guard, Nick never expected to face a life-changing injury. In addition to daily occupational and physical therapy sessions, Nick spent a great deal of his time in the Art Therapy Studio, learning a skill he had wanted to explore for years before his injury: painting. Nick also found the studio to be a great place to spend time with his wife and two children. Nick and his wife are even creating an art studio in their home, so the whole family can continue to enjoy the creative process. “I came to Magee lacking perhaps the most important skill for recovery: patience. Exploring art taught me to value patience, as many pieces took days to develop. It also gave my family a chance to spend time together. Seeing my wife’s smile as she completed a piece of artwork was priceless.”

Celebrate Nick and Magee’s Art Therapy Program at the annual Magee Art Heals fundraising event on Tuesday, October 10, 2017.  There will be artwork from 27 art therapy participants on display, including work by Nick.
