What Will My Day Include

All staff members at Moss-Magee are dedicated to providing you with the best care to meet your needs and goals. It is important that you receive the necessary amount of therapy each day so you may reach your greatest potential during your stay here.

After admission, we will provide you with a schedule outlining your therapy times and assigned therapists for weekdays (Monday through Friday). While we make every effort to keep your schedule consistent from day to day, there may be times that we ask you to attend therapy sessions at the end of your regularly scheduled day or at different times of the day. We may also ask you to participate in weekend therapy sessions. Additional sessions may be scheduled to ensure that we are making progress toward your individual therapy goals.

In the event of a schedule change during the week, we will do our best to communicate changes to you ahead of time. If you are participating in weekend therapy, a schedule will be delivered to your room on Friday and/or Saturday night for the following day.

Medication Education

Medication education and pharmacy counseling is available to all patients from our team of pharmacists, physicians, and nurses. It is likely that your medication regimen will change throughout your stay at Moss-Magee, as you recover.  When you leave Moss-Magee, it is quite possible that your home medications will be different than they were prior to your injury, illness, or surgery.  We encourage you to ask questions and discuss options with your team at any time. Before you leave, make sure you are comfortable with your medication schedule and that you know how to take your medications. Tools, such as a customized medication schedule (www.medactionplan.com/mymedschedule) and a pill box/organizer, may help you organize your medications and remember to take them.  Your case manager and a clinical pharmacist will assist you to make arrangements for all home medications before your discharge.

Vaccinations

We have both flu and pneumonia vaccines available. Please tell your nurse or physician if you would like to receive either vaccine. Both flu and pneumonia can be very dangerous to people with limited mobility, so we ask that you consider vaccination if you have not already done so.

Other Services As Needed

  • Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology
  • Specialized wound care
  • Respiratory therapy

Assistive Technology

The Assistive Technology Center, also called Moss-Magee’s “Smart Room,” is located in Moss-Magee’s Spinal Cord Injury unit. Assistive technology equipment can help patients participate in activities of daily living related to controlling their environment, or equipment. Therapists provide evaluations to identify the most appropriate assistive technology for each patient. Patients can also use assistive technology to access computers and the internet while at Moss-Magee. Please talk with your occupational, recreational or physical therapist to learn more.

Moss-Magee also provides an Assistive Technology (AT) Suite that is specifically designed for adolescent patients who are recovering from traumatic injuries such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and amputation. Moss-Magee serves a significant number of adolescent patients (approximately 50 adolescent patients each year) and is the only rehabilitation hospital in the urban center of Philadelphia that specifically serves adolescents.

The Adolescent AT Suite serves a dual function for our patients: it provides access to life activities that our young patients would otherwise not be able to participate in while simultaneously encouraging young patients to move their arms, torso, head and feet –activities that further strengthen their physical and cognitive rehabilitation. Importantly, the positive emotional response of young patients to having a room where they can be themselves, explore, play, and socialize will help our patients with the emotional adjustment to being injured and living with a disability.

Art Therapy and Art Studio Groups

Art Therapy is part of our Clinical Outreach Program, and part of the healing process for patients. No prior art training or experience is necessary for you to participate. Individual patients, assisted by the art therapist, use all forms of art and the creative process of making art to improve and enhance their physical, mental and emotional well-being. Please ask your therapist about the days and times for the Open Art Studio sessions. The art studio is located on the 6th floor and participation for inpatients is free of charge.

Horticulture Therapy and Open Greenhouse

The greenhouse is open on Tuesdays (4-7 p.m.) and on Sundays (1-3:30 p.m.). Join our horticulture therapist to pot a plant, do a project or help in the Greenhouse. Family and friends are welcome. The greenhouse is located on the 6th floor and participation is free of charge.

Music Therapy

The Music therapist uses music and sound to improve and enhance your physical, mental and emotional well-being. No prior training in Music or experience is necessary for you to participate. Participation for inpatients is free of charge.
